Frustration, frustration, frustration. I've got the dreaded lurgy. Not swine flu. Thank goodness. Definitely not swine flu. But aching limbs, painful ears, the sniffles and something nasty lurking in the depths of my chest. Please, please, please don't let it become bronchitis - something I am prone to. Anyway, I'm back in bed!
The upside of the flu-lite is that the depression has lifted. Nothing makes me want to get out and do stuff more than when I can't. So being stuck inside on a gorgeous sunny day just makes me determined to make a speedy recovery.
The only downside is that I am consuming fluids and food at quite an alarming level. Hot drinks with honey? Check. Ice cream. Check. Lots of ice cold drinks - fully-sugared Ribena and mineral water is my favourite right now. Check. And soup. Check. Particularly chicken noodle soup. I am not sticking hard and fast to a
low-histamine diet but I am trying very hard to avoid tomatoes because I think they may be a trigger. So that rules out Heinz Tomato Soup, which is an absolute necessity when a cold or man flu is in the offing. The sad thing is I LOVE tomatoes and as any vegetarian will testify, tomatoes form the basis of many veggie delights. I've cut out the booze (still) and continued to give in to
my vegetarian cravings. Until now. I needed soup and after running through the options in my mind, I knew it had to be chicken (noodle). Homemade would be ideal but not an option so - given that our local supermarket had limited supplies - I've had
Symington's Chicken Noodle Soup - which is "LESS THAN 1% FAT". Happy days!
Obviously, I'd rather not buy a packet soup but do you know what? "Captain Robert Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton both took Symington's Soup to Antartica." So I'm in good company and shivering as I type - for extra authenticity.
NB - there isn't a great image of chicken noodle soup (particularly from Symington's) and so I went for a pop art alternative. Don't, whatever you do, ever buy Heinz Chicken Noodle Soup. That really is a very poor substitute.
Oh dear! My sympathies comrade... it sucks. Hope you're on the mend soon.
